BOOK REVIEW ~ Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

Thanks to Penguin First to Read and my friend Kristi for the ability to read an ARC of Rebel of the Sands! My review is fully honest!

Check out my YouTube Review HERE for more explanation of my thoughts!

Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton comes out on March 8, and is 320 pages long. You can get it in hardcover or on Kindle and Nook. Links will be at the end!

GOODREADS DESCRIPTION:
She’s more gunpowder than girl—and the fate of the desert lies in her hands.
Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mystical beasts still roam the wild and barren wastes, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinni still practice their magic. But there's nothing mystical or magical about Dustwalk, the dead-end town that Amani can't wait to escape from.
Destined to wind up "wed or dead," Amani’s counting on her sharpshooting skills to get her out of Dustwalk. When she meets Jin, a mysterious and devastatingly handsome foreigner, in a shooting contest, she figures he’s the perfect escape route. But in all her years spent dreaming of leaving home, she never imagined she'd gallop away on a mythical horse, fleeing the murderous Sultan's army, with a fugitive who's wanted for treason. And she'd never have predicted she'd fall in love with him...or that he'd help her unlock the powerful truth of who she really is.

REVIEW:

  • The beginning was pretty interesting
  • I instantly loved Amani
  • I enjoyed the action at the start of this, and throughout
  • There was very nice world building
  • I enjoyed the character development too
  • The explanation of the rebel prince was interesting, and fairly different
  • I do feel like her escape was a bit too drawn out, but everything else in this book made up for that
  • The escape itself was definitely crazy, and kept me on the edge of my seat.
  • I absolutely loved the author's writing style!
  • There was amazing detailing!
  • Amani was a pretty big badass in this book
  • I really enjoyed the backstory in this, and the way it flowed in with the plot
  • So much craziness happened around 2/3 into this book, and it was so enjoyable
  • I loved Jin. The author did so well developing his character.
  • I really enjoyed finding out who Amani was, and seeing her training
  • I really liked Amani and Jin's relationship, and the buildup of it
  • The ending was absolutely crazy, and left me wanting more!
  • Overall, this was an amazing book, and I can't wait to read more by Alwyn Hamilton!
  • I gave Rebel of the Sands 5/5 stars!

BOOK REVIEW ~ Bloodmark by Aurora Whittet

*I received a copy of this on Netgalley from Wise Ink Publishing in exchange for an honest review!

Bloodmark by Aurora Whittet was released on November 1, 2013. I received a copy as a promotion for the third book, being released this year! It is 333 pages long in hardcover, and 300 pages long in eBook format!

GOODREADS DESCRIPTION:
Sixteen-year-old werewolf princess Ashling Boru is different from other wolves—she was able to shift to wolf form at birth. Rather than bringing pride to her family, it brings fear, and as a result, she is forced to live in seclusion in Ireland’s countryside. Ashling’s reputation is further blackened when she refuses her betrothed and defies the ancient laws. When her pack’s oldest rivals begin hunting her, she finds herself in the small town of York Harbor, Maine—far from everything she’s ever known.

In Maine, she crosses paths with the dark and rebellious Grey Donavan, and something ignites within her soul. There’s just one problem: Grey is human. Their instant connection turns into a passionate romance, and Ashling begins to believe she can create her own life outside of wolf laws. When she begins to uncover long-buried pack secrets—secrets that threaten to destroy all she holds dear—Ashling’s courage and tenacity are tested. Will she choose her deep and enduring love for Grey, or will she follow Old Mother’s path to her destiny?

REVIEW:

  • This book didn't immediately draw me in
  • There was good character development right from the beginning though
  • I really didn't understand why Ashling was treated with such hate by most of her family
  • I feel like this was too fast paced in the beginning and then slowed down too much
  • I disliked that this was insta-love
  • This book got a bit more interesting after learning about what Grey was
  • After that, I started really liking Ashling and Grey's relationship
  • The first 2/3 of this book was very hot and cold to me
  • The last third was where the book became really interesting!
  • The author was very good at making you hate the bad guy
  • I ended up really enjoying this book by the end!
  • Overall, I gave this book 4/5 stars!
  • I am already continuing the series, as book 2 was on Kindle Unlimited! I'm 30% through it, and it is definitely worth reading!

Amazon - $5.99 on Kindle (Not on KU!) $19.99 hardcover

BOOK REVIEW - Seven Ways We Lie by Riley Redgate

I received a copy of Seven Ways We Lie on Netgalley from Amulet Books in exchange for an honest review!

Seven Ways We Lie will be released on March 8, 2016, and is 352 pages long.

As always, for my full thoughts, check out my YouTube video HERE.

DESCRIPTION (from Goodreads):
Paloma High School is ordinary by anyone’s standards. It’s got the same cliques, the same prejudices, the same suspect cafeteria food. And like every high school, every student has something to hide—whether it’s Kat, the thespian who conceals her trust issues onstage; or Valentine, the neurotic genius who’s planted the seed of a school scandal.

When that scandal bubbles over, and rumors of a teacher-student affair surface, everyone starts hunting for someone to blame. For the unlikely allies at the heart of it all, the collision of their seven ordinary-seeming lives results in extraordinary change.

REVIEW:

  • This book started off pretty interesting
  • The POV changes were done really well
  • I didn't understand why a few of the beginning POVs were there until further into the book
  • I felt like the first POV was interesting, but the next few were really slow, and maybe weren't needed
  • Juniper's first POV really sucked me back in fully
  • I really liked how diverse the characters were in this!
  • There was some amazing character building
  • I had quite a few flashbacks to high school while reading this
  • I was really drawn to the characters after a while, and became really invested in the story
  • Some parts of this book really surprised me
  • Matt and Olivia were definitely my favorite characters in this book
  • Overall I really enjoyed this book, and will definitely pick up a physical copy!
  • I rated Seven Ways We Lie 4/5 stars!
FIND THE BOOK:
Amazon - Kindle is $9.99, Hardcover is $17.95
Barnes and Noble - NOOK is $10.49, Hardcover is $17.95

BOOK REVIEW ~ City of Legends by Cheyanne Young

I received a copy of City of Legends on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

City of Legends is a re-release of Powered by Cheyanne Young, which was self-published, after being picked up by Alloy Entertainment. This new edition was released on February 2, 2016.

DESCRIPTION (from Goodreads):
Maci Knight has grown up in the shadow of legends. Her father and her brother, Max, are Heroes, worshipped by humans and Supers alike for their strength and valor. All she’s ever wanted is to follow in their footsteps, to fight villains and protect humankind. But Maci has a secret—one that could change everything.

Maci had a twin sister who died the same day they were born. In their world, one twin is always good, while the other always eventually turns evil. There’s no way to tell which twin will go rogue . . . which means no one knows if Maci will suddenly become a villain.

The closer she gets to her eighteenth birthday, the more she has feelings she can’t control: Violence. Rage. Revenge. Maci wants to be a Hero. But she may not have a choice . . .

The first in a trilogy, City of Legends introduces a new superhero mythology and an unstoppable heroine.

This is a new edition of the previously self-published novel Powered.

REVIEW:
  • This started out alright, but didn't draw me right in.
  • I felt like there wasn't a lot of explanation at the start
  • There was almost no world building or character development though the entire book.
  • This really needed some backstory, I was fairly confused through a majority of the book
  • I really disliked not being able to picture the characters or the world due to the lack of detail
  • I felt like it was a bit fast paced, and also found Maci to be really whiny for a majority of this
  • It was pretty all over the place and made almost no sense through the first half to three-quarters of the book
  • Overall, while the plot was okay, as a whole there was nothing there.
  • I gave this book 2/5 stars, and only for the fact that I ended up enjoying the ending.
  • I will not be continuing with this series.
You can find City of Legends on amazon, where is is 99 cents for the kindle version or free for Kindle Unlimited Subscribers.
It is also on Barnes & Noble for $11.99 for the paperback, but is the old edition, Powered.

As always, for full thoughts, see my YouTube review HERE.

Stars Above by Marissa Meyer Breakdown Review

I decided to do a post about my breakdown of Stars Above by Marissa Meyer. There is 8 different novellas in this bind-up, so I'm going to write out my star rating and review of each novella! The new novellas written exclusively for Stars Above were very short compared to the already written ones, so they have shorter reviews.

The Keeper: I loved getting to see Michelle's perspective on Cinder coming to be in her care. 5/5 stars

Glitches: I loved getting to see Cinder meeting her step-family. I could easily picture the whole thing, and felt pretty bad for her sisters and mom towards the end. However, I still hate her step-mother. 5/5 stars

The Queen's Army: I loved this glimpse into how Ze'ev was chosen and trained to become the ruthless soldier we first met. This was very interesting! 5/5 stars.

Carswell's Guide To Being Lucky: This was a very cute glimpse into Carswell as a teen. I really enjoyed this, but honestly would have preferred seeing him getting the ship instead. This was still awesome though. 5/5 stars

After Sunshine Passes By: I felt so bad for Cress while reading this one. It was really nice to see what had happened to her though. 5/5 stars.

The Princess and The Guard: This story made me hate Levana even more than I already did. It was a great story and made me understand what Winter went through under Levana's care even more. 5/5 stars

The Little Android: This was a retelling that, while I felt wasn't very needed, was still incredibly interesting! It was very well written, as is expected when Marissa Meyer does a retelling! 5/5 stars.

The Mechanic: I really liked getting to see Cinder and Kai's first meeting from Kai's POV! 5/5 stars

Something Old, Something New: THE WEDDING!!! OMG!!! It was definitely not the wedding I was expecting that we were going to get, but it was awesome! I was very happy after reading it, and having everything come together. Amazing epilogue to The Lunar Chronicles! 5/5 stars.

So obviously, I rated Stars Above 5/5 stars!

Now can we please talk about THE GRAPHIC NOVEL THAT WAS ANNOUNCED???? I'm so excited for that to come out, and get something in Iko's POV!! I think it's going to be amazing, and I'm highly anticipating the release!

BOOK REVIEW ~ Halfway Bitten by Terry Maggert

I was introduced to Halfway Bitten by the author himself. Terry contacted me on twitter asking if I'd like to review this book, and of course I said yes!! HALFWAY BITTEN COMES OUT FEBRUARY 9TH!

I have a video review posted HERE where you can find some more explanation to the review.

DESCRIPTION (From Goodreads):
When clowns, vampires, and corpses start piling up in town, Carlie has to break away from her boyfriend, Wulfric, to bring her witchy skills to the table- or grill, as the case may be.
When the body of a young woman washes up in the lake, it unleashes a spiral of mystery that will bring Carlie, Gran, and Wulfric into a storm of magical warfare.
Spells will fly. Curses will rain. Amidst it all, Carlie will make waffles, protect her town, and find out if a man from the distant past can join her in happy ever after.
With love and honor at stake, Carlie has no peer.

REVIEW:

  • Immediately, I could easily picture everything that was going on!
  • I was sucked right in again, only this time through the suspense instead of action
  • I'm glad that there was a bit more explanation of where Halfway was situated at the lakes, since they are about 2 and a half hours away from where I live!
  • There was a lot better development of Carlie in this book
  • I loved how you still couldn't predict what would happen next! It kept me sucked in the entire time.
  • There was definitely a good amount of action in this one, and it was very enjoyable
  • Carlie was a huge badass in this one. I mentioned this in my T5W video and post as well!
  • I liked the introduction of new characters and creatures. It makes it so you don't get bored seeing the same characters over and over again!
  • I liked how there was a good amount of detailing with Carlie's spells if there was more to it than a few words.
  • The humor was definitely there again, I was laughing so much at points!
  • The plot just kept getting better and better
  • Some of the chapter titles in both this and Halfway Dead made me crack up! I loved them!
  • I really wish one of my grandma's were as cool as Carlie's grandma is in this book
  • Overall, I loved this book so much, and was so sad when it ended! I need Halfway Hunted (book 3) so bad! I can't wait to see when it will be released!
  • I will definitely be getting myself physical copies of both Halfway Dead and Halfway Bitten as soon as possible!
  • OVERALL RATING: 5/5 stars

Take a bite out of evil.
The circus came to Halfway, and they brought the weird.

Weekend Wrap Up - February 1

What a way to end the month!! I managed to finish 2 books this weekend, and I'm pretty happy!!

This weekend I read:

  1. A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole
  2. Halfway Bitten by Terry Maggert
  3. Oblivion by Jennifer L Armentrout
And here's my daily breakdown!
  • On Friday, I read the first 40 pages of A Hunger Like No Other, as well as 3% of Oblivion. I am not even going to try to estimate the exact number of pages there, but it's around 30 I think.
  • On Saturday, I read 110 pages of A Hunger Like No Other.
  • On Sunday, I power read my butt off! I finished the last 206 pages of A Hunger Like No Other, plus the last 85% of Halfway Bitten, which I estimated to be around 277 pages worth of the book!

BOOK REVIEW ~ Halfway Dead by Terry Maggert

I was introduced to Halfway Dead by the author himself. Terry contacted me on twitter asking if I'd like to review the sequel, Halfway Bitten, and so I borrowed Halfway Dead from Kindle Unlimited. My review for Halfway Bitten will be up next week!

DESCRIPTION: (from Goodreads)
Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY—a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is twenty-five pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her Grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest—and only—real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it. When a blonde stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me. Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie’s magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she’ll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

REVIEW:
I always end up doing these in bullet points. It's easier for me to keep my thoughts together like this!
  • I was immediately pulled in my the small bit of action at the start of this book.
  • I really enjoyed the character developments, a lot of which made me crack up so hard (such as Carlie's parents)
  • I really enjoyed the world building, especially being a New Yorker myself (living near Albany). What I would have loved was a little more detail as the where Halfway was in comparison to the lakes.
  • I enjoyed that Carlie is a fairly new witch, and is still learning her spells. It was nice to see her learning a bit.
  • I liked that Carlie doesn't just use her magic for everything, and has rules to how people request spells from her. It was something different!
  • The lore about the place Carlie was asked to find was pretty creepy and interesting, and it only got better as you learned more!
  • The storyline definitely got a bit creepy at times (in the "what the heck" way), but I loved that. You couldn't predict what would happen next.
  • The humor was definitely a huge plus to me, I was laughing so much at some things
  • I did enjoy reading Wulfric's history. It made no sense of why it was added until further in the book, but then I fully understood.
  • Bindie the wisp was probably one of my favorite side characters, along with Gus the cat!
  • Overall, this was a very good book that left me wanting more. There were a few parts (very few) that I felt might have been unneeded or a tiny bit too slow, but it was an amazing book anyways!
  • Overall rating: 4.5/5 stars!
  • I will definitely be buying a paperback copy of this ASAP!
Here is where you can find Halfway Dead:
Amazon - Kindle is 99 cents, Paperback is $9.99

Unfortunately, this book is not available on NOOK. Maybe in the future?
